Dance Desires offers the opportunity for students to participate in dance competitions. Solo or Duo/Trio items are for selected students only, however the ‘Performance Group’ is open to any Dance Desires student.

The Performance Group class is used to work purely on choreography for competitions, and concerts as well as stretching, flexibility and acrobatic work. Students will be provided with this class at no extra cost, however students must participate in a minimum of 2 other classes throughout the week of which 1 must be ballet.

Students will receive extra attention to their dance technique while having fun working in a team situation. The performance group DOES require regular attendance but is very advantageous to the students. Each Performance Group will learn at least 1 dance – however in some cases students will learn more if capable. The style of the dance will be decided based on the strengths of the particular students participating.

The age groups for our Performance Groups are as follows (Please note that the age groups are set based on the age of your child on the 1st of January 2011):
Junior - Under 10yrs of age
Inter - Under 12yrs of age
Senior - Under 14yrs of age
Eg. If you child is 9yrs of age on the 1st of January – then they will be in the Junior Performance Group.

Students in the Performance Group will perform at the following events:

  • S.F.D Combined School Concert – April/May

The SFD combined schools concert occurs every year in Victoria. Students of all ages come together to represent their school and perform works reflecting diverse styles of dance and choreography.

  • S.F.D Competitions – June & Southern Festival Dance Competition - September (school holidays)

This is a competitive event where schools from all across Melbourne compete in style and age appropriate sections for awards.

  • Students will also perform these dances at the Annual Dance Desires Concert.

Competitive dance is not so much about competing as it is learning from other dancers and appreciating dance. The critiques offered by the adjudicators are invaluable and dancers are provided with original crit sheets, (a recording of the adjudicators comments made during the routine), that they may improve both the routine and their own technique. Dancers are expected to be courteous to one another. They are reminded that they are not competing against each other but against themselves. Competitive dancing requires dedication, as there are many hours spent practicing dances and developing routines. During competition, dancers perform in front of the adjudicators who evaluate their efforts and mark the routine. The placings are allocated and medals and/or trophies are awarded accordingly. Each routine is required to comply with certain rules. It must enter in a category, which is consistent with the music, style, and content of the dancer's routine.
